Short and spare, Zakariya’s poems often carry a sting at the end. Drawing her subjects from the minutiae of daily life and the particularities of nature, she uncovers in ordinary experience hidden meaning that is at once universal and highly personal. A visit to the ophthalmologist prompts a meditation on the limits of vision (“Eye Doctor”). The felling of a neighbor’s tree (“Stump”), the imprint of autumn leaves on the pavement (“Leaving”), the shadows of pines on a frozen lake (“Snow”)— these and other deceptively simple poems become reflections on the cycle of life. But there is nothing maudlin here Zakariya’s is a mature voice that, while tinged with melancholy, is leavened with a wry humor.

The poems in "Arithmetic" go right to the head and the heart. The poems are about everyday sights and experiences that contain wisdom and wit. They do what good poetry should do, they make you look at the world around you a second time. I found that many of the poems sounded in my head long after I had read them. The poems reflect an intelligence and appreciation of irony that have caused me to return time and time again to favorites. There is a steady, unblinking, but sympathetic eye upon us and the world around us in these poems.

Arithmetic and other verses from late in life eBook Sally Zakariya Reviews

These poems are fantastic. Each one, while simply written, stir up complex memories and sweep me away to other times. I've never been much for poetry, but these are worth reading. As a brief escape or for the mere enjoyment of phrases that roll naturally off your tongue before echoing indefinitely in your mind, this book delivers in a big way.
In "Arithmetic and other verses from late in life" the poet uses words as a kind of combinatorics of life, ringing changes on human existence. Words swirl around seeking and finding form, creating vivid images of what was, what is, and what is to come. As she writes in "Afterword"

Writing a poem is
stringing two words together
and then two more
and making them
add up to five
because the whole should be greater
than the parts

In other words, poetry is shorthand for life and Zakariya's slender volume paints life in all its varied hues.
While reading about the tornado in Oklahoma this week, I was reminded of a section of a poem in this book titled, "Tornado Warning."

When it comes they say
it sounds like a freight train
bearing down on you
sucking all the air from its path
and you like a penny flattened on the track
hear the howl and
feel the thrum of the rail

Like many of the poems in this book, timeless and relevant.

I highly recommend it to anyone who loves poetry.
I've just read Arithmetic by Sally Zakariya. I'd have traded moments of my life for the lives of those whom I am sure were there to hear Sally read these poems for the 1st time. The poems are uncommon in their perception. I enjoyed, in particular, Cookbook, for its blending of exotic fare and gentle humor. I was struck, too, by Stump, a poem that caught the sentiment (without being sentimental) I have for trees. I often skip around in poetry books but I found that the longer I read, the less skipping I did. Very nice work,
