Mudras occupy an important place in Buddhist and Hindu religious practices as these signify special meanings, associated with specific divinities and rites, which cannot be represented any other way. This book is a dictionary of mudras in Hindu and Buddhist religious practices that lists the various mudras -- deity-centred, rite-centred, yogic-centred, and so on -- illustrating each with a simple drawing drawn generally from the perspective of one holding the mudra. It contains detailed notes that give numerous references to literary and other sources that reveal a lot about the mudras -- their descriptions in the texts, rites associated with the mudras in the texts as well as the varied interpretations of a number of mudras in the different texts. The book also has an introduction on Hindu and Buddhist mudras that goes into iconographic features associated with deities along with the technical descriptions and the subcategories and further divisions into which mudras are arranged. It scrutinises the work done by a number of scholars on the subject to throw further light on the subject. The volume will prove indispensable to all students and scholars who are engaged in study of Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions and practices.

I LOVE this book. It is helpful for cross-referencing mudras (mostly hand shapes) from different sources as well as finding out the origin of the mudra. It has wonderful illustrations and a description of how to hold the hands in the shape of the mudra. What this book does not do. It does not tell you how to use or apply a mudra for its healing properties.
If you are looking for a beginner book on mudras and how to use them, this is NOT the book for you. Try Mudras: Yoga in Your Hands by Gertrud Hirschi.

Mudras in Buddhist and Hindu Practices An Iconographic Consideration Fredrick W Bunce 9788124603123 Books Reviews
I has hope for a job as good as "Yantra...", but it does not delivered.
Mudras has many uses - for healing, rituals, meditations, yoga practices and so on. The book however did not mention anything about it - it simply listed various mudras with their names and pictures and that's it - no any additional practical information whatsoever. It is like a menu - all mudras listed there, but nothing else. Very dissapointing, it could be excellent work instead of a lame one.
arranged like a dictionary or encyclopedia, this volume presents line drawings of numerous mudras. Beside the pictoral representations are explanations of the origin, meaning, and "construction" of each mudra. i have encountered the topic of mudras most often surrounding yoga, however, this volume presents them as they relate to the various hindu and buddhist icons. this is why i found it most useful and intriguing. it has shed an entirely new light on the statuary i own and allowed me a deeper appreciation of each.
