Love it! You can actually find a copy of this to read online before you buy it, believe on Google books. So much fascinating information: description of the current (1906) state of each quarry, the history of each quarry (as best as the authors could gather during their research), a rather detailed description of the granite in each quarry (composition, structure, dikes, sheeting, etc.), and, my favorite, a listing of some of the destinations of the granite from each quarry. What truly got me excited about this book was first reading about where the granite had been used. To know that the Mount Waldo Quarry, a place where I had been many, many times, was the source of stone in the Philadelphia mint, a place I had been a couple of times as a child (my family is from Philly) was a pretty stunning connection. I also found that the Pleasant Bay quarry was the source of granite in some of the trimmings in Philly's city hall. You can probably be equally surprised by some of the amazing places Maine granite has ended up!Product details

The Granites of Maine George Otis Smith Thomas Nelson Dale State Survey Commission Of The State Of 9781298587084 Books Reviews
This reprinted book is an excellent source for information about Main'e granite industry. It is written in the turn if the 19th century English, but is quite readable. Methodology was thin in those day yet much detail of the mineralogy and geology of the quarries is provided. Some of the information about the history of the quarries is extremely hard to find. Well worth the purchase. The only sad bit is that so little attention to the reproduced images was given. The majority are wasted printed space and are of no help at all. Admittedly reproducing old, often degraded photos is a problem, however, these images contain more valuable information about historic sites than many times the printed text space. With various easily available image processing software, upgrading old faded images can give dramatic results.
